Vol. 27 No. 1 (2026): Baniwa Narratives and Folk Tales

This work is the result of a working group formed as part of the university extension course “Texts of the Territory,” offered by CENIR/FEUSP in partnership with the Indigenous organization Nadzoeri and involving practicing teachers and Baniwa and Koripako scholars. The group chose the theme “Baniwa Narratives and Folk Tales,” with the aim of documenting, valuing, and strengthening the traditional knowledge of the Baniwa people, who inhabit the Upper Rio Negro region, as part of the Indigenous school education policy in the municipality of São Gabriel da Cachoeira, Amazonas.

This work documents a selection of folk narratives, myths, sacred places in the Içana River region—the traditional territory of the Baniwa and Koripako peoples—and forms of knowledge that are part of the collective memory of the Baniwa people. Together, these materials represent ways of transmitting values, teachings, ways of life, and relationships with the territory.
