This article is an excerpt from the Dissertation for the Master's Degree in Education and is linked to the line of research History and Philosophy of Education of the Graduate Program in Education, a Master's degree course at the University of Caxias do Sul. The research deals with the Kaingang group that lives in Canela/RS and the problem that mobilized the investigation was: how do lived and shared experiences allow us to preserve ancestral memories and stories? And how do they mediate the knowledge constructed for cultural preservation? The research had as its general objective: to analyze the process of preserving knowledge and cultures through mediations in the Kaingang group that lives in Canela/RS, considering the traditions, memories and stories of the group. In addition to bibliographic research, methodologically interviews based on Oral History were conducted. Based on the interviews, I present the analysis of the memories and traditions of this group, which is interconnected with the cosmos, with an understanding of the aspects of nature. It is important to realize that the Kaingang keep very much alive in their memories the ways of teaching children according to their own processes and this is being redefined as an important space to strengthen the construction and empowerment of the Kaingang people. The life of the Kaingang indigenous people is based on spirituality, which permeates cultural aspects in respect for identity: the paintings used in the making of handicrafts and the maintenance of indigenous traditions, history, language and knowledge extol ancestral knowledge.
